You will know Le Fanu's "The Rise and Fall of Modern Medicine": I got a copy of the second edition for Christmas. It remains a very good read. I hadn't remembered the clarity of his descrition of ye 'Big Idea' of Rose that if you could bully moderate drinkers into drinking slightly less this would lead to problem drinkers drinking less too. To describe this mnotion is to refute it.
Some old people are reported today ('the Daily Telegraph') to be prone to 'drink too much, i.e. exceed the 'recommended' limit - recommended by whom and by what authority? Well into my eighth decade, I am reviewing my life and looking towards a limited future in this world, though I do have faith and belief in the message of this Christmas season. I take great exception to these callow secular preachers presuming to know what contributes to my quality of life and to lecture me, uninvited, on how I should live it.
