Normal price for a bottle of Bells or Teachers is £14, but is sometimes discounted down to £12.Curmudgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02558747878308766840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3585028625507474093.post-86465727272370970902011-01-21T12:59:18.615+00:002011-01-21T12:59:18.615+00:00Anon, USA,

What does a low end 40% whisky cost at Tesco?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3585028625507474093.post-48969133097665169172011-01-19T08:31:23.522+00:002011-01-19T08:31:23.522+00:00Found it now – spirits are taxed at the rate of £2...Found it now – spirits are taxed at the rate of £23.80 per litre of pure alcohol. So the duty on a litre of 37.5% vodka is £8.93, which becomes £10.71 once VAT at 20% is added. The minimum price for a litre of 40% whisky would be £11.42.Curmudgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02558747878308766840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3585028625507474093.post-9791635637549121932011-01-18T23:08:38.897+00:002011-01-18T23:08:38.897+00:00Spirits are taxed more highly per unit than beer o...Spirits are taxed more highly per unit than beer or wine because of the lower production cost, so I can well believe the £10.71 a litre figure for vodka, which is about 27p a unit. It's a bit late to be researching the details of the alcohol taxation system but I think that's roughly correct.

The tax on Tesco Value lager will be rather less than 38p a can, I think.Curmudgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02558747878308766840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3585028625507474093.post-68673025594662543502011-01-18T23:01:38.945+00:002011-01-18T23:01:38.945+00:00Curmudgeon,

I'm puzzled by this from the BBC:

"They say banning shops and bars from selling drinks for less than the tax paid on them will cut crime and set a "base price" for the first time.

It works out at 38p for a can of weak lager and £10.71 for a litre of vodka."

I can well believe that duty plus tax on a can of lager amounts to 38p, but the talk of £10.71 for a litre of vodka suggests some sort of minimum price has been set. As does this:

"A 50p-per-unit minimum was backed by health campaigners but the Home Office proposal is for a lower minimum price of about 21p per unit of beer and 28p per unit of spirits."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12212240Christopher Snowdonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15963753745009712865noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3585028625507474093.post-59182013198558907102011-01-18T22:56:08.822+00:002011-01-18T22:56:08.822+00:00It's interesting that, while this was always d...It's interesting that, while this was always described before as "a ban on below-cost selling" it is now being spun as "minimum pricing".

I've often made the point before that, despite the scaremongering, the actual proportion of alcohol being sold below invoice price by supermarkets is minimal. I'd be amazed if it was over 1% of total alcohol units sold.

If anyone's making a loss, it's the suppliers.Curmudgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02558747878308766840noreply@blogger.com
